This brown stoneware jug dates from the mid to late 1800's. Since there is no maker's mark, it is impossible to date it more precisely. The exterior of the jug is a very pleasing matte chocolate brown. It stands about 11" tall with a bottom diameter of 7 1/4" and a circumference at the widest point of about 25".

There is a 1/2" long shallow chip near the top mouth as well as what appears to be a glaze skip to the left nearby. The bottom edge (base) has several chips and rough pockmarks, some of which may be glaze skips (or signs of usage). There is an approximately 3" long area of roughness on one shoulder about 3" below the top rim, as well as some blackish discoloration in several places (burns?). See photos for close-up detail.

This is a very pretty piece of pottery with absolutely no cracks. As you can see, the top is narrower than the base, producing a pleasing "bell" shape. We love combining brown, tan, and cream pottery together for a beautiful color palette. We think you will too!
